Do not agree to pay anything till you have legal council which should be provided free of charge via JAG.  Sometimes agreeing to pay fine or payments is considered admission of guilt and once done cannot be contested leaving you at risk for additional claims of loss and expenses.  Get advice from JAG.  And I am sure that even military housing is governed by same rules as private housing where they carry insurance on property.  So again your losses should be only what you have lost in the way of possessions and perhaps deductibles if you are taken to small claims court or you make agreement with other parties to settle for deductible amount.  If you choose to pay neighbors the deductible for damaged vehicles, be sure to have them sign off on agreement that issue is settled which is another thing the Jag can help you draw up.

You can be held responsible for some of the damages done by your son.  I'm sure people had insurance on their vehicles.  So their insurance would have covered all but the deductibles. 

Go & see base Legal/JAG asap.  Base housing should carry housing insurance.  Check with legal to find out your rights & your exact liabilities.

I am living in military housing and I do not know if they even have a insurance policy that will cover the damages.  My neighbors garage is conected to my garage and they lost both vehicles because of the fire my son has started.  I also have another neighbor that is telling my wife to pay her $200.00 for the damages she that she has.  To me it sounds like she wants me to pay her deductible for her losses caused by the fire.  With the fire being started by my son that is 7 years old and has ADHD and bipolar disorder I think that I am going to be responsible for all the damages.  Tell me what you think?  I do not even have renters insurance either and I lost a whole bunch of stuff in my garage also.  If for some reason I do have to pay for all the damages I am going to be screwed big time and I am going to need help to pay for all damages financially.

Dear battlecoxswain: Renters insurance only covers your possessions. The owner of the home is responsible to carry insurance on premises w/you as tenant. Check with your JAG. Your losses should only be personal possessions lost in fire. Same goes for the vehicles.
